How important is your demo lesson?
(and how much an excellent demo is worth)
In part one, we learned that companies assess a candidate's teaching ability and style by observing them while they teach their demo lesson. But that's not all they do -
"Online Teaching Companies determine a teacher's hourly wage based on their demo lesson. "
Not all online English teachers have the same hourly wage. If you are an experienced online ESL teacher you’ll receive one amount, if not; you’ll receive another. If you have a Bachelor of Education or a CELTA, you’ll earn more than someone without these qualifications.
Even teachers with the EXACT SAME experience, qualifications and education can start on lower or higher hourly rates.
A candidate’s teaching ability is judged solely on their demo lesson… and acing this 15 minute ‘test” can lead to hundreds (if not thousands) of extra dollars.
Most teachers, unless exceptional, receive by default the "starting" hourly rate.
What is the starting wage for ESL teachers?
Schools have a $1 - $2 wage differential for all new teachers.
Let’s go through some examples...
All the other schools do the same: They all decide on an hourly rate for the applicants which they set while watching them teach their demo lesson.
What is a good demo lesson worth?
Now $1 or $2 might not seem like that much but let’s calculate how much extra money you could be earning (or leaving behind):
Most ESL teachers work at least 20 hours a week (5 days a week x 4 hours a day)
4.5 (weeks in a month) x 20 (hours a week) = 90 hours a month
90 hours a month x ($1 - 2 wage difference ) = $90 - $180 USD every month
"A good demo lesson saves you $90 to $180 dollars every month."
Teachers can usually only ask for a pay raise after 6 months so let’s presume their wage won’t increase until then.
$90 USD x 6 months = $560 USD
$180 USD x 6 months = $1120 USD
"Performing well in your demo lesson can help you earn an extra $560 - $1120 USD during your 6 month contract."
Have a look at the graphics below to see how much extra money you can earn per week, per month and per year when you earn an extra $1-2 USD per hour.
Start on the left and find how many hours you work per week - slide your finger across the grid to find how much your teaching salary can increase!
For example if you work 30 hours per week and earn an extra $2 per hour, by doing an excellent demo lesson and impressing the interviewer, you will earn $3,240 USD more every year!
How much money do online teachers actually make?
There are a lot of online teaching companies that claim to pay their teachers up to $26 USD per hour. Make sure you read the fine print before applying to teach with one of these companies. Often this high wage can only be obtained if you meet very specific requirements, are eligible for all of the company bonuses and have been working there a certain amount of time.
If you are applying for an online teaching job, make sure to ask what the hourly base rate is - this is the rate before any bonuses or additional extras, and it is usually a more accurate representation of what you will be paid starting out. (It takes time to build up hours and a to have a full schedule with regular students.)
What is the average English teacher salary?
The average ESL teacher salary for native English speakers is $16 USD per hour or $1280 per month (most online companies can offer only about 20 hours per week!) This is why some teachers work for more than one company at the same time.
For applicants who have done a practice demo lesson beforehand, this figure jumps to $18 USD per hour. We carry out short demo lesson practice sessions and 97% of our customers start on a wage higher than the industry average.
You can earn an extra $20-40 USD per week - just by taking a little big longer to prepare for your demo lesson and by practicing before hand with a real life student.
